French Door Styles

Lipped French Doors

Lipped French doors represent a reliable, 20th-century architectural configuration where the door leaf slightly overlaps the outer frame. Built for enhanced weather protection and structural stability, Coluxor lipped French doors are engineered with a 68mm leaf and a matching 68mm frame. The design preserves traditional design proportions by featuring a classic, deep 177mm bottom rail alongside a 25mm weatherboard to effectively deflect rainwater away from the threshold.

Flush French Doors

Coluxor flush French doors are engineered to replicate the elegant proportions of period architecture, where the door leaves sit completely level within the outer frame. Specifically designed to match our flush casement window range, these doors preserve the historical authenticity of heritage and listed properties.

To meet strict conservation criteria or architectural preferences, they can be specified with either specialized Single Glazing (4mm to 6.5mm) or Slimline Glazing featuring a narrow 16mm cavity.

Totally bespoke timber French doors

Our bespoke French doors can be tailored to fit expansive openings, with single door leaves manufactured up to 1.3 meters wide and double door configurations reaching up to 2.1 meters wide. By integrating matching sidelights and fanlights, a complete door set can span up to 5 meters in width and 3 meters in height.

You can introduce a distinct architectural character to your property by incorporating curved or arched frames and swept heads. Alternatively, you can achieve perfect symmetry by framing the entryway with equal-width sidelights, significantly expanding the glass surface area to let natural light fill your home.

Premium Timber Selections

Every door in our collection is expertly crafted from certified, sustainably sourced engineered laminated timber. We provide the choice between premium redwood (Scots Pine) and durable hardwood (Dark Red Meranti), both backed by our identical, comprehensive warranties. While both offer exceptional performance, our hardwood features a more open grain pattern, delivering a beautifully textured aesthetic that is especially striking when finished with a timber stain.

Tailor your French door design

You can personalize every detail of your French doors with sculpted panels and bespoke glazing bars tailored to your exact architectural style. Introduce unique design elements by incorporating custom solid panels, tinted solar control glass, or decorative colored glass. For a heritage look, you can also integrate traditional leading in square, diamond, or Queen Anne configurations.

Our versatile single or dual-color paint and stain options allow you to choose one finish for the exterior to complement your facade, and a different shade for the interior to match your interior decor.

Well engineered and energy efficient French doors

Our single and double French doors are built using robust, 68mm thick leaves crafted from premium, engineered laminated timber that is entirely free of natural defects for exceptional structural stability. Equipped with high-grade weather seals, our standard double glazing achieves U-values as low as 1.3 W/m²K, ensuring full compliance with Part L Building Regulations for both new builds and renovations. For specialized projects, our unique internally glazed, drained, and vented SlimLine system delivers an impressive overall Ud value of 1.4 W/m²K, while our acoustic glazing options can achieve sound reduction ratings as high as 47dB to effectively block out external noise.

Timber French Door FAQs

What is a French casement door?

A French casement door is where both door leaves on a French door or casement window open to create one large opening without the presence of a mullion. This design is often referred to as a flying mullion.

What is a master and slave door leaf?

On a pair of double French doors, the master leaf (frequently referred to as the traffic door) is the primary door used for day-to-day access so you do not have to unbolt both sides every time. The slave leaf functions as the secondary panel that is opened less frequently; it typically anchors firmly into secure locking points within the main door frame or the master leaf itself.

Can I have parliament hinges on your French Doors?

We do not supply parliament hinges for our French doors because they generally lack the necessary adjustability required for heavy timber doors over time. Instead, we equip our doors with premium, corrosion-resistant, fully adjustable hinges from SFS Intec, specifically utilizing the Easy 3D and SFS Just 3D hinge systems to ensure long-term, flawless alignment and smooth operation.

How many locking points do your French door locks have?

Our timber French doors are designed with three robust locking points to ensure maximum home security. The multi-point locking espagnolette system secures the door at two distinct points, while the third locking point is provided by our high-security, 3-star Neighborhood Watch approved cylinder lock.

Is your lock insurance approved?

Yes, our locking systems meet strict insurance standards. The multi-point espagnolette locks we use are sourced from industry leaders Fuhr and Winkhaus, and they carry full PAS24:2016 and Secured by Design accreditation. For the ultimate level of protection, our cylinder locks come from the ERA Fortress line. These cylinders are certified to TS007 standards, hold a premium 3-star rating, and are officially endorsed by Sold Secure Diamond, the Neighborhood Watch, and Secured by Design..

Can the French doors open to 180 degrees?

No, they cannot. To prevent damage from the wind and protect the structural integrity of the frame, our entire range of outward-opening French doors is fitted with restrictors that limit the opening angle to exactly 90 degrees.

Can I have handles only on the inside of my French doors?

Yes, you can configure your French doors with internal handles only. This internal-only setup is a popular choice for inward-opening balcony doors and is compatible with our Balmoral and Balmoral Swan door handle styles. To complete the installation and ensure everything is firmly secured, a neat blanking plate is installed on the exterior side of the door to lock the internal handle safely in position.

At what height does a French door require a double handle?

Our French doors that are above 2.3 meters high will automatically be equipped with handles on both the lead and slave leaves. This integrated double locking system provides enhanced stability and additional peace of mind, ensuring that doors of such large proportions remain perfectly secure.

What does handle operated mean?

A handle-operated setup means that the high-security multipoint espagnolette lock system is engaged directly via the door hardware. When you lift or turn the lever handle, it smoothly drives and controls the internal shoot bolts or deadbolts to secure the door into its frame.
